What is Gain Staging?

Gain staging is the process of managing the audio signal level at every single point in your recording chain. The goal is simple: achieve the optimum signal-to-noise ratio.

If your signal is too hot, you overload the equipment and get nasty, unfixable digital distortion. If your signal is too quiet, you underpower your chain. When you inevitably have to turn that quiet audio up later in your software, you drag all the background room noise, electronic hum, and preamp hiss up with it.

How to Do It Yourself

If you have invested in a quality audio interface (like a Focusrite Scarlett, Universal Audio Apollo, or Audient setup), you want its hardware preamp to do the heavy lifting. Here is the golden rule for DIY gain staging:

• Set it at the source: Speak into your microphone at your loudest streaming or recording volume.
• Push the hardware: Turn up the gain dial on your physical audio interface until your software meters are hitting a healthy, solid level (usually hovering around -12dB to -6dB).
• Don’t fix it in post: Never leave your physical preamp turned way down and try to “boost” the volume digitally inside OBS or your DAW. Once the audio hits the analogue-to-digital conversion stage, any noise introduced by digital boosting is practically impossible to remove cleanly.
