Mic too quiet in OBS: remote help

Mic too quiet in OBS?

Viewers keep asking you to speak up, and turning OBS up just adds hiss. I’ll find where your level is lost and set it properly, live on a remote session.

Sound familiar?

You can hear yourself fine, but on stream you’re buried under the game.

Fader

Turned up, still quiet

You’ve pushed the OBS fader and added a gain filter, and you’re still quieter than everything else.

Microphone

Louder means noisier

Every boost brings up hiss and hum along with your voice.

Interface

Words cut off

The ends of words or quiet breaths vanish, as if something keeps switching your mic off.

Where the level goes missing

A quiet mic is usually set wrong further up the chain: the gain dial, the mic’s pattern or direction, or Windows and Mac settings working against you. I check those before touching OBS.

How I fix it

A live remote session. You stay at your desk, and I work on your computer with you.

1

I call you on WhatsApp

A voice line on your phone, separate from the mic we’re working on, so we can talk while we test.

2

I connect and listen

I connect to your computer with AnyDesk and hear your audio in real time through Audiomovers LISTENTO.

3

We set the level at the source

Gain on the mic or interface first, then the system settings, then OBS, until you’re loud and clean without pushing a fader to the top.

A real fix

A teacher whose quiet voice kept being cut off.

Live Diagnostic CASE ID #237

Clipped words and lost breaths on a Blue Yeti

The setup

The problem

She records guided meditations on a Blue Yeti in Audacity on Windows 11. The ends of her words were being clipped and her breaths silenced by noise reduction she couldn’t find to switch off.

What I did

  • Talked her through turning off the Windows audio enhancements, and we switched off the mic noise reduction in HP Audio Center.
  • Switched the Blue Yeti to cardioid and showed her the best distance and angle for the mic.
  • Set the Yeti’s gain dial and the input level in Audacity for a strong signal without distortion.

The result

Result: her breaths came through and her words faded out naturally instead of being cut. Her review: “He walked me through every microphone setting.”

Before you book

The questions streamers ask me most.

Can’t I just add a gain filter in OBS?

You can, but if the level is low before OBS, a gain filter turns the noise up with it. Setting the gain at the source gives you volume without the hiss.

Is my mic too cheap?

Usually it’s the settings, not the mic. A Blue Yeti on the right pattern and gain sounds far better than most people expect.

Will it work with my setup?

Windows or Mac, USB or XLR, OBS or another streaming app. If you’re not sure, the free Diagnosis will tell you.
