TotalMix FX setup help for RME interfaces

TotalMix FX too complicated?

Your RME interface is brilliant, but TotalMix FX is a maze. I’ll set it up so you hear yourself with no delay and control it all from one fader, live on a remote session.

Sound familiar?

Great interface. Baffling software.

Interface

A delayed voice in your headphones

You hear yourself a fraction late, because your voice goes through your recording software first.

Routing

The routing matrix

Inputs, outputs and submixes everywhere, and you can’t tell what goes where.

Fader

Too many faders

Separate mixes for speakers and headphones, when you just want one volume control.

Let the interface do the work

RME interfaces can monitor you directly through their own DSP, with no delay. TotalMix FX controls that, once it’s set up for how you actually work.

How I fix it

A live remote session. You stay at your desk, and I work on your computer with you.

1

I call you on WhatsApp

A voice line on your phone, separate from the mic we’re working on, so we can talk while we test.

2

I connect and listen

I connect to your computer with AnyDesk and hear your audio in real time through Audiomovers LISTENTO.

3

We set up TotalMix FX

Headphones on the interface, your mic sent straight to them through TotalMix FX, outputs linked so one fader does it, and unused inputs muted.

A real fix

A breathwork teacher recording guided sessions on an RME Babyface Pro FS.

TotalMix FX simplified for a breathwork teacher

The setup

The problem

She records guided sessions into Ableton Live on a Mac with an RME Babyface Pro FS. She couldn’t hear her own voice without a distracting delayed echo, and the TotalMix FX routing matrix was overwhelming.

What I did

  • Made sure her headphones were plugged into the interface itself, so its DSP could monitor her with no delay.
  • Stopped routing her live voice through Ableton, so TotalMix FX sends the mic straight to her headphones.
  • Linked the main and headphone outputs so one fader controls her listening volume, and muted every unused input.

The result

Result: her daily routine is now simple: plug in the interface, connect her headphones, open Ableton and record.

What it costs

£90

A focused, one-hour, screen-shared session to find and kill a specific problem. Mic suddenly not recording, distortion out of nowhere, routing that’s blocking your chat, software that won’t behave. Most issues are gone inside the session.

Full Studio Setup

£180

Around two hours. I take control and configure your whole rig from scratch — hardware and software, gain staging, mic positioning, routing, the lot. For new gear, a new room, or a setup that’s never quite worked properly. You end up with a system that just runs.

Before you book

The questions RME owners ask me most.

Can I have reverb in my headphones with no delay?

Yes. TotalMix FX can add reverb on the interface itself. In another session I set up a zero-latency reverb for a singer’s headphone mix.

Will I have to set it up again every time?

No. Once it’s set, TotalMix FX keeps it, and snapshots let you switch between setups with one click.

Does it work with my recording software?

Yes. Monitoring through TotalMix FX happens before your software, so it works the same with Ableton Live, Logic Pro or any other app.
