OBS not picking up your mic: remote help

OBS not picking up your mic?

Your mic works everywhere else, but the meter in OBS stays flat. I’ll find where the signal stops and get your voice on stream, live on a remote session.

Sound familiar?

The mic is plugged in and its light is on, but your stream is silent.

Routing

The flat meter

The OBS audio mixer doesn’t move when you talk, even though Windows or your mic’s own app can hear you.

Interface

The wrong input

You’ve picked your mic in OBS settings, but the signal is going to a virtual device, the wrong input or only one channel.

Chat

Stream or chat, not both

Your viewers can hear you but your team in game chat can’t, or the other way round.

The usual suspects

A mic that’s silent in OBS usually comes down to one setting in the chain: Windows sound settings, your interface’s own software, or OBS itself. I check all three.

How I fix it

A live remote session. You stay at your desk, and I work on your computer with you.

1

I call you on WhatsApp

A voice line on your phone, separate from the mic we’re fixing, so we can talk while your audio is in pieces.

2

I connect and listen

I connect to your computer with AnyDesk and hear your audio in real time through Audiomovers LISTENTO.

3

We follow the signal

From the mic, through your interface and its software, into OBS, until your voice moves the meter and records cleanly.

A real fix

A Twitch streamer whose mic was silent in OBS and in her game chat.

Remote session CASE ID #171

Elgato Wave Link mic silent in OBS and GTA V chat

Her setup

The problem

Her Elgato Wave Link mic wasn’t picked up by OBS or by her in-game chat in GTA V, and her earbuds in the Wave Link headphone jack played nothing.

What I did

  • Found the Wave Link headphone output disabled in Windows Sound Settings and switched it back on.
  • Talked her through choosing Wave Link Microphone with FX as her mic in OBS, then set OBS to monitor through her Wave Link headphones.
  • Talked her through the same mic and headphone choice in GTA V voice chat, followed by a restart.

The result

Result: she tested voice chat on a game server and could stream and talk in game again. Her review: “Paul is amazing at what he does!”

Before you book

The questions streamers ask me most.

Do you need access to my computer?

Yes, through AnyDesk, for the length of the session. You see everything I do and can close the connection whenever you like.

What if it’s my hardware?

Then I’ll tell you. Sometimes the software is fine and the fault is physical: in one session we traced a silent mic to a loose connection inside the XLR plug, from a photo the client sent me.

Will it work with my setup?

Windows or Mac, USB or XLR, OBS or another streaming app. If you’re not sure, the free Diagnosis will tell you.
