Sound familiar?
You bought a good mic. It doesn’t sound like one yet.
The thin voice
Your recordings sound small and lifeless next to the voices you listen to.
Room in the recording
You can hear the room around your voice: a boxy, reflective sound.
Plugin guesswork
You’ve stacked EQ and plugins from tutorials, and it still doesn’t sound right.
How I fix it
A live remote session. You stay at your desk, and I work on your computer with you.

We set the fundamentals
A real fix
A voice actor whose new mic sounded thin.
The problem
Andrea had a new RØDE NT1-A and a Focusrite Scarlett Solo. Despite hours of YouTube tutorials and plugin experiments in Reaper, her recordings sounded thin.
What I did
- Adjusted the mic’s position in her room to cut reflections, and found the right distance for her voice.
- Checked the Scarlett Solo so her gain was set correctly and the signal was clean.
- Confirmed her Reaper settings, then added only light compression and a gentle low-end roll-off. Heavy EQ wasn’t needed.
The result
Result: her test recordings sounded rich and full. Her words: “This is the best quality sound I’ve ever heard come out of my studio.”

Before you book
The questions voice actors and streamers ask me most.
Do I need a different mic?
Probably not. In Andrea’s case the mic was fine; the fixes were position, gain and light processing.
Do I need acoustic treatment?
It helps, but position comes first. Small changes to where the mic sits in the room can cut reflections before you spend anything.
Does it have to be Reaper?
No. The same approach works in Audacity, Adobe Audition, Logic Pro or GarageBand, or in OBS if you’re streaming.
Takes less than 2 minutes.
