Capture card audio not reaching OBS?

Game sound comes through, but Xbox party chat or your headset mic doesn’t. I’ll get game, chat and mic onto your stream through your capture card, live on a remote session.

Sound familiar?

A console, a PC and a headset all want to own your audio. Getting them to share is the hard part.

Xbox

Party chat missing

Viewers hear your game but not your friends in Xbox party chat.

Microphone

Mic or capture card, never both

Your headset mic works, or your capture card does, but not at the same time.

Interface

OBS hears no mic

The headset is connected, but OBS gets no microphone signal at all.

Console, PC and OBS

Party chat, game sound and your mic each take a different route: down the HDMI cable, through a USB receiver or over Bluetooth. I set the route for each so they all land in OBS.

How I fix it

A live remote session. You stay at your desk, and I work on your computer with you.

1

I call you on WhatsApp

A voice line on your phone, separate from the mic we’re working on, so we can talk while we test.

2

I connect and listen

I connect to your computer with AnyDesk and hear your audio in real time through Audiomovers LISTENTO.

3

We route each source

The headset connection, then the console’s audio settings, then Windows permissions and OBS, until game, chat and mic all reach your stream.

A real fix

A Twitch streamer whose capture card and headset mic wouldn’t work together.

Live Diagnostic CASE ID #271

Xbox party chat and headset mic missing from an HD60 X stream

The setup

The problem

He streams an Xbox One through an Elgato HD60 X into OBS on a PC, wearing a Turtle Beach Stealth 700 headset. His capture card and headset mic refused to work at the same time, and party chat never reached the stream.

What I did

  • Disabled a duplicate Bluetooth connection so Windows used only the headset’s USB receiver.
  • Talked him through the Windows privacy settings to give OBS access to the microphone.
  • Changed the Xbox Party Chat Output to “Headset and Speakers”, so chat travels down the HDMI cable into the capture card.

The result

Result: game sound, party chat and his headset mic all reached his Twitch stream, and the headset switched cleanly between Xbox and PC. His review: “Paul went out of his way to make sure I understood the process.”

Before you book

The questions streamers ask me most.

Can my game and mic go on separate tracks?

Yes. Once each source reaches OBS by its own route, it can have its own track and volume. In a Full Studio Setup, game audio routing is an add-on, quoted separately.

Does it matter which headset I have?

It can. Headsets with both a USB receiver and Bluetooth can connect twice, and the two connections fight. In one session, switching off Bluetooth fixed it.

Will it work with my setup?

Most console and capture card setups route the same way. If you’re not sure about yours, the free Diagnosis will tell you.
